Why buy organic cotton?

Australian made organic cotton

We think we know cotton. Our understanding is that it is natural and somehow healthier for us, and the earth, because of this. The truth is that it is probably the most “unnatural” agricultural crop grown today. Production depends on using large amounts of pesticides and other toxic chemicals. Some of these chemicals have been found in the cotton clothing we wear.

Since 99% of cotton is grown in developing countries as a single cash crop on tiny plots of land, the farmers are very vulnerable. First world tariffs artificially keep the prices low. Poor safety information and the high use of chemicals make poisonings frighteningly common. Child and bonded labour is rife. Farming methods degrade already marginal land. Water shortages from high use and contamination cause suffering for the people.

Organic cotton farmers choose to grow cotton without using harmful chemicals or genetically modified seeds. This increases their quality of life, the purity of their product and limits costs usually extracted by big business. Their methods allow natural ecosystems and biodiversity to flourish.  They improve the quality of the soil and often use less water. Yields are good and the quality is fantastic.

By simply choosing to buy organic cotton products – our global economy ensures you can directly shape world response.

Petico uses only organic cotton tshirts certified to The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). This is organic cotton’s gold standard. It guarantees organic production, adequate wages and a ban on child labour and inhumane treatment.
